There are a range of common household items that you can use as an alternative to commercial sandboard wax.

Making your own homemade wax is not too difficult and comes with a range of benefits: first of all, it gives you control over which ingredients to use and which to avoid.

Many people opt to blend their own sandboard waxes so they can ensure that the final product is eco-friendly and/or vegan, which we 100% endorse!

Picking the DIY route can also be fun and inexpensive, helping you to save a few pennies in the long run. Need to say more? Let’s get started…

Sandboard wax ingredients

The first thing that you will need is a sort of fat.

Because you will likely use your wax in a desert or beach area with medium-high temperatures, it is important to opt for materials that will stay solid and not fry your board (avoid cooking oils, please!).

You can choose a single ingredient or create a blend.

These are popular picks:

  1. Organic Virgin Coconut oil. Coconut oil is vegan, widely available, an excellent lubricant… and it smells like summer! Can’t recommend it enough, for a wide range of applications from teeth pulling to skin moisturising to, well, use as sandboard wax. For our wax-making purpose, make sure to pick a virgin / unrefined variety.
  2. Beeswax. We are going to use either beeswax or a vegan alternative in place of paraffin, which is widely used in commercial board waxes. Beeswax is a byproduct of honey, a type of wax that forms the building blocks of a hive.
  3. Double Refined Candelilla Wax. Vegan substitute for beeswax.

Add some scented oils

The ingredients above already have a lovely scent so if you are happy with the perfume of honey and coconut, you are good to go.

In any other case, you can experiment with pretty much any other scent that comes in the form of essential oils.

You may pick any scent according to your liking, have a look at Our Own Candle Company’s wide collection of fragrance oils for inspiration and you’ll surely find something that fits your taste.

What else you will need

  • A Large Pot
  • A smaller pot or container
  • (Wax) Molds
  • Rubber gloves

You are going to need a large pot, a smaller pot or container that can fit inside the larger pot, and some molds.

Any kind of molds will do, but if you wanna get professional you can use specialty wax molds meant for candles.

The use of rubber gloves is also recommended, unless you like getting your hands dirty.

We like to make our wax in honeycomb shaped molds… But you don’t have to.

The recipe – how to make your own sandboard wax

Once you have gathered all your ingredients and equipment, time to get your hands dirty (again, we recommend to put on some gloves!).

Here’s what you need to do, step-by-step:

  1. Start boiling some water in the larger pot and place your fat(s) in the smaller pot or container.
  2. You will then need to place this smaller container in the larger pot, creating a bain-marie double boiler.
  3. Let the fats melt and blend completely, stirring regularly until they melt down to a liquid, and turn off the heat.
  4. This is now a good time to add a few drops of your fragrance oil (if any).
  5. Pour your solution into the molds, and leave to dry. Check again in a couple of hours until they are solid and ready for use.

There you go, 100% natural and organic sandboard wax made with love and care

If you are reading this, you probably already own a sandboard, but for those of you who want to further give in to your DIY impulses, why not embark on a journey into building you own sand board or sand sled?

What ratio of coconut oil to beeswax works best?

    1. Hi Liz! You can do a 1:1 ratio for an all-purpose wax. If you want better speed you can do 2:1 beeswax to coconut oil, but this will likely need to be re-applied to your sandboard after every ride and have a neutral scent. If you are adding scented oils to your blend, I recommend using more coconut oil as it releases fragrances more slowly and sticks to your board for longer.

      Cheers
