This increasingly popular sport activity consists of using a sandboard or sled to slide down sand dunes and it is practiced all over the continent.

Until now, opportunities to practice sandboarding in South Australia were somewhat limited, with people mostly heading to the Yanerbie Sandhill on Streaky Bay or Kangaroo Island.

Fowlers Bay Conservation Park is also going to allow sandboarding on selected areas in the near future.

Rangers at the National Parks have been inquired numerous times about locations suitable for sandboarding and even approached by adventure tourism businesses interested in promoting the activity on their site.

Sandboarding and sand sledding are generally safe recreational activities, but they can have detrimental effects on the natural dune ecosystem, which is why it’s important to only practice these away from vegetated areas.

Each park has now identified the most suitable hills where sliding can be safely practiced without harming wildlife.
