Indonesia is a great destination for sand surfing, which can be practiced on the massive Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo sand-hill near the city of Yogyakarta on the main island of Java.

The Parangkusumo Sand Dunes are a very popular and easily accessible tourist attraction for they are the only location in the country that closely resembles a desert, a kind of “reverse oasis”: one small isolated plot of sand completely surrounded by greenery.

The dune area is located less than one hour drive away from Yogyakarta city, close to Parangtritis Beach. Admission to the site costs Rp10.000 per visitor, every day between 07:00 and 18:00. There is a parking fee, Rp3.000 for motorcycles and Rp5.000 for cars.

Sandboarding is available at the site and you can rent a board for Rp70.000 or book a lesson with an instructor for Rp100.000. The sand mountains are the result of a combination of wind movements and volcanic activity in the nearby Yogyakarta mountains.

Toilet facilities and food stalls are available at the site, and the nearby beaches are also worth a visit, with plenty of seafood restaurants and markets all around.
