The largest celebration of sand art and recreation in South Korea is returning this year after a halt due to the covid pandemic. The Heundae Sand Festival will take place from May 20th to May 23rd in Busan, officially signalling the start of beach season in the country. Every year in late May or early June, the Festival is an opportunity for artists to showcase their breathtaking sand sculptures, which are the main attraction of the site. The theme for this year is “Traveling the world through the sand”.
On top of that, a series of sand-themed sport and fun recreational activities, such as sand sledding, beach volleyball, marathons and hot sand baths take place during Heundae Sand Festival, which ends with a series of beach parties and fireworks.
