Famous for its unique vegetation and wildlife, much of which cannot be found anywhere else in the planet, Socotra Island is a unique place on Earth, known as the pearl of Yemen and of the entire Arabian region.

Ras Erissel, the eastern cape of the island, is also home to milky white sand dunes suitable for sandboarding.

Arher Beach Sand Dunes – Socotra

Ahrer beach is the most popular sandboarding spot in Socotra, in the far east of the island and easily accessible from the main city Hadiboh.

You can arrange a sandboarding session with instructor and equipment included, by contacting socotra.info

The best time to go sandboarding in Yemen is during the winter months (November to March), when the weather is mild and there is less rain. However, sandboarding is possible year-round, as the sand dunes are always soft and dry.

Socotra Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique biodiversity and otherworldly landscapes.

Other than sandboarding, it offers a variety of activities for visitors, including:

  • Hiking: Socotra has many hiking trails for all levels of experience, offering stunning views of the island’s unique landscape.
  • Swimming and snorkeling: Socotra’s crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life make it a great place to swim and snorkel.
  • Boat tours: Boat tours offer a great way to see Socotra’s coastline and remote beaches, as well as marine life such as dolphins and whales.
  • Visiting local villages: Socotra has a number of traditional villages where you can learn about the island’s culture and way of life.
  • Stargazing: Socotra’s dark skies and little light pollution make it an ideal place to stargaze.
  • Other activities: Other popular activities on Socotra include birdwatching, fishing, and rock climbing.

Please note: While Socotra Island is relatively safe to fly into, it may not be safe to visit Yemen for tourism at this time due to ongoing conflict and instability.

The U.S. Department of State advises against all travel to Yemen and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel to the country.
