There are many sandboarding locations in Western Australia.

The sand dunes near Lancelin are probably the most popular, but there are many other spots across the region, on desert and coastal dunes near Perth, the Turqouise Coast near Green Head and Jurien Bay, and on the coast east of Albany and near Esperance.

Sandboarding in Perth

Lancelin Dunes – Lancelin

Located approximately 1.5 hours by car from the city of Perth, the Lancelin Sand Dunes make for one of Australia’s most popular sand surfing destinations. At this site you can glide down the tallest peaks in Western Australia.

While you are there, make sure to combine your stay with a visit to the Pinnacles Desert and check out the wildlife at Yanchep National Park. This is one of the nearest sandboarding spots to both Perth and Geraldton.

Board Rental

You can rent a sandboard online and pick it up in Lancelin. Alternatively, you can book a tour or 4WD rental which often include a free sandboard rental as well.

Moore River Sand Dunes – Guilderton

There are few places in the world where you can sandboard next to a river, and Guilderton is one of them.

The sand dunes surrounding Moore River are so big locals called the area “the Desert”, reachable by boat or by swimming across the river from the Stephen’s Crescent Trail Walk. Sand boards can be purchased from the Visitor Centre in Guilderton.

The sand dunes at Guilderton are a great place to try sandboarding, as they offer a variety of slopes and challenges for beginners and experienced riders alike.


Sandy Cape Recreation Park – Jurien Bay

Sandy Cape Recreational Park is located near Jurien Bay and Greenhead, it offers beautiful white sand beaches and dunes for sandboarding. You can hire a sandboard for 10$ a hour or arrange a sandboard tour.


Greenhead Beach Dunes – Green Head

There are many small beaches on the Turquoise Coast near Green Head where you can sandboard.


Sandboarding near Albany

Nanarrup Beach

Nanarrup Beach is located about 20km east of Albany and easily reachable by car. The car park is located just behind the dunes, but you can also drive on the beach with an off-road 4WD vehicle.

You can rent a sandboard or boogie board online and have it delivered to your accommodation anywhere in the Albany City Area.

Cheyne Beach and Hassell Beach dunes

Located just north of Cheyne Beach, in a rural location known as Green Range, Hassell Beach has large steep coastal dunes not too far from Albany.

Sandboarding in Pilbara

Coral Bay Beach

Beach near the small town of Coral Bay. You can walk or drive a few kilometers away from the beach to find sand dunes for boarding and sledding.
