The Montaña de Oro State Park near Los Osos and Morro bay has for long been a top sandboarding spot in California. Unfortunately, sandboarding and sand sledding are not permitted at the Morro Dunes Natural Preserve anymore. The former sandboarding area is now fenced and you can be run into a heavy fine for trespassing.

The park is still worth a visit and renowned for the spectacular scenery with vast sand dunes formed by wind erosion and volcanic activity. The Morro Sand Dunes are located at the end of a long sand spit barrier within Sandspit Beach, which goes all the way there from Morro bay.

While the dunes are a protected area, you are free to enjoy recreational activities at Sandspit Beach – such as hiking, surfing, and beach sports.
