Bruneau Dunes State Park – Bruneau

Bruneau Dunes State Park is home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, with a peak rising 470 feet above the surrounding desert floor. Explore the dunes on foot or rent a sandboard from the Visitor Center, but remember that off-road vehicles are only permitted on the main road. You can also fish for bluegill in the lakes at the foot of the dune; unlock the mystery of the desert with a breathtaking hike or horseback ride; plan a group picnic or visit the Bruneau Dunes Observatory and gaze at the night sky through the Observatory’s collection of telescopes.

Sandboard Rentals

You can rent a sandboard for $15 a day or two for $25 a day from the Visitor Centre Nature Store directly at the park. Keep in mind that that park staff will not offer sandboard rentals when the air temperature reaches 80 degrees due to the sand temperature reaching scorching levels and posing a risk for burns.

Although much of the sand dunes is managed as a wilderness study area, the area is popular for high off-road vehicle use. Dunes up to 400 feet high attract riders from throughout the west. ORV users are strongly encouraged to avoid damage to vegetation and impacts to wildlife so that use of this unique area may continue. Others prefer to explore the dunes on horse and on foot.
