The landlocked region of Gauteng in South Africa does not have any coastal dunes, but it is still possible to practice sand surfing at Mount Mayhem mine dumps, located in Boksburg about half a hour drive from Johannesburg and just outside of Benoni.

Sandboarding at Mt. Mayhem – Boksburg
The closest sandboarding spot to Johannesburg is Mt. Mayhem, situated in Boksburg, just outside of Benoni and about a 30 minute drive from Joburg.
Mt. Mayhem is not a real mountain, but rather a mine dump and leftover site of an ancient gold mine, with slopes suitable for sandboarding. Sandboarding in South Africa is one of the fastest growing underground sports, one that is filled with adrenaline, thrills and plenty of fun.
Pure Rush Industries offers guided sandboarding tours in Benoni, including transport, equipment and lessons with a professional sandboard instructor in a small group. Bring comfortable clothing, sneakers and long socks.
