You can sandboard on the largest sand dunes on the East Coast at the Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, one of the main sand surfing destinations in the USA.
The park is open all year round (except on Christmas Day) and it is also a fantastic place for sandboarding, flying a kite, or simply watching the sunset in the desert-like landscape of Outer Banks.

Sandboarding at Jockey’s Ridge State Park – Nags Head, Outer Banks
Great sand dunes with very soft sand, close to the towns of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head where you can rent a board and obtain a sandboarding permit. If you bring your own sandboard, then you will need to obtain a permit from the Jockey’s Ridge Park office.
You do not need a permit for sand sledding which is especially popular with kids and practiced with cardboard and bodyboards.
Hang gliding is another very popular activity at Outer Banks and it also requires a permit that you can get from the park. Access to Jockey’s Ridge State Park is free.
