Sand boarding, sledding and skiing are all exciting, action-packed activities that will make any trip to the desert memorable. But, as with any extreme sport, accidents can happen, and your travel insurance may not cover these niche activities in their package.

If you are planning to go sandboarding, sand sledding, sand skiing or even volcano boarding – make sure you got the right type of insurance with you.

How to choose a sandsports insurance

The type of insurance that you will need depends on a combination of factors, such as:

  • Where are you a resident (i.e. where do you live, work and pay taxes)
  • Where are you travelling to
  • What kind of activities are you going to practice

Most travel insurances do not cover action sports, but will often allow you to purchase an extra action sport coverage.

That said – what kind of action sports are included in such coverage, and whether the company even recognizes sandboarding as a sport at all, it’s something you need to make sure of.

Sandboarding, sand sledding and volcano boarding may also be covered under the umbrella-term “sandboarding” (i.e. surfing on a dune of sand with a board), but this may not apply to “sand skiing” and “sand kiting” which use skis instead.

So make sure to know exactly what kind of equipment you are going to use and check with your insurance provider that they will cover you accordingly.

Other activities, such as offroading, dune riding, dirt biking and general desert hiking should also be ideally covered as they are often combined with sand boarding.
