Sandboards and sand dune sleds are two types of recreational equipment that are specifically designed for the exciting activities of sandboarding and dune sledding.

These thrilling sports are enjoyed by many adrenaline-seeking individuals who crave the rush of sliding down steep, sandy slopes with the wind in their hair and the sun on their faces.

Sandboards and sand dune sleds are uniquely crafted to provide riders with the ability to effortlessly glide down sand dunes, much like their snowboarding or sledding counterparts.

However, unlike snowboards and sleds, sandboards and sand dune sleds are specially designed to function optimally on sand.

Their base is crafted to be slick, allowing the board or sled to easily slide down the sand dune without getting stuck or slowing down.

Additionally, these pieces of equipment are equipped with fins that provide riders with greater control over their descent, allowing them to maneuver and carve their way down the dune with precision and finesse.

How to Choose a Sandboard

There are two main types of sandboards: traditional sandboards and sand sleds.

Traditional sandboards resemble snowboards and are suitable for more advanced riders.

Sand sleds, on the other hand, are a beginner-friendly option that allows riders to sit or lay down on the board while sliding down the dunes.

Sandboard

These types of boards are equipped with foot straps and are used while standing, mimicking snowboarding.

Sandboards come in three different tail shapes: twin tips (round edges), square tail, or swallow tail.

Twin tips boards are good for jumping and carving; square tail boards are also called “directional” and are better suited for riding forward during races, swallow tail boards are lighter and easier to maneuver.

Sand sled / bumsled / sand toboggan

A sand sled, also known as a bumsled or sand toboggan, is a popular alternative.

Sand sleds are generally smaller and wider and come with a seating pad and/or hand grips instead of foot straps and used for either sitting or laying down on your belly.

These boards are meant to be used as sleds or bodyboards, can accomodate more than one person if sitting and they are especially suited for children and beginners.

The best sand sleds for desert dunes are made of the same type of hardwood and laminate combination as a sandboard, while a sand sled for beach can also be made with cheaper materials.

How to use a sandboard

Before you start, make sure you have all your sandboarding gear ready.

Then, head to a suitable dune with a steep slope and dry, thin sand that has no obstructions.

Once you’ve found a good spot, lay your sandboard on the ground with the base facing up.

Thoroughly wax the base with sandboard wax to make it as slippery as possible. Make sure no sand granules attach to it.

After waxing, flip the board back over and attach your feet with foot straps or bindings (if sandboarding) or lie down on your belly or sit on the board (if sand sledding).

To start your descent, use your body weight to push yourself down the edge of the dune.

Slightly bend your knees in order to advance, or use your arms if you are sledding.

As you slide down the dune, try to keep your weight centered on the board to maintain control.

And most importantly, enjoy the ride and have fun!
