Sandboarding and sand tobogganning are the two main tourist attractions near Anna Bay, with scores of people heading to sled down the dunes of Stockton Beach and Birubi Beach in Port Stephens.

Birubi Beach is a long stretch of sand that stretches for about 11 kilometers (7 miles) between Anna Bay and Stockton Beach.

Anna Bay is a small town located near the southern end of Birubi Beach, while Stockton Beach is located near the northern end.

All three locations are situated about 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Sydney and about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Newcastle.

Getting There

Stockton Beach is located in New South Wales, Australia, just north of the Hunter River. It extends 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Stockton to Anna Bay. The closest airport is Newcastle Airport.

From Sydney

You can reach Port Stephens by car from Sydney in about 2.30h. Turn right at the roundabout at the end of the M1, following the signs for Hexham and Pacific Highway (BP service station and Hungry Jacks will be on your next left).

The road will veer to the right and connect with the New England Highway, after which you can merge into the left lane and follow the sign for the Taree and Pacific Highway, which will take you over the Hexham Bridge.

Coaches to Port Stephens leave Sydney every day via Chatswood, Pymble, Hornsby, and Raymond Terrace.

From Newcastle

To reach Stockton Beach from Newcastle, drive east on the Pacific Highway and turn right at the roundabout at the end of the M1, following the signs for Hexham and Pacific Highway.

The road will veer to the right and connect with the New England Highway, after which you can merge into the left lane and follow the sign for the Taree and Pacific Highway, which will take you over the Hexham Bridge.
