About the Thar Desert

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is an arid region located in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent.

It covers an area of 200,000 km² (77,000 sq mi) and is the world’s 18th-largest desert, and the world’s 9th-largest hot subtropical desert.

The desert spans across the Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana, with more than 60% of it lying in Rajasthan.

The Thar Desert is bordered by the irrigated Indus River plain to the west, the Punjab Plain to the north and northeast, the Aravali Range to the southeast, and the Rann of Kachchh to the south.

It is known for its rolling sand hills and unique ecosystem. The most recent paleontological discovery from the Thar Desert pertains to a herbivorous dinosaur group known as dicraeosaurids, dating back to 167 million years ago.
