NEW YORK CITY, Czerwiec 19, 2024 – A relentless heat wave has descended upon the central and northeastern United States, shattering decades-old temperature records and posing a potentially deadly threat to millions of people.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and excessive heat warnings for roughly 80 million residents stretching from Indiana to New England, as the region grapples with sweltering conditions.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center in response to the high temperatures, which are expected to last until the weekend.

This is a deadly event,” Hochul warned, noting that the heat wave could prove more deadly than previous natural disasters like blizzards, powódź, and hurricanes. To help residents cope, New York is opening its beaches, public pools, and cooling centers earlier than usual, just in time for the Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday.

The heat has been particularly intense in Chicago, where the city reached a record-breaking 97°F (36.1°C) at O’Hare International Airport on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 96°F set in 1957. Temperatures remained around 91°F (32.8°C) on Tuesday, with the heat index, which factors in humidity, reaching a stifling 105.1°F (40.6°C).

Residents like Breanne Trammell, who celebrated her 44th birthday on Wednesday, have been desperately seeking relief, spending their birthday money on air conditioning units to cool their sweltering apartments.

Dangerous Conditions and Wildfires

The extreme heat can lead to a range of dangerous health conditions, w tym odwodnienie, wyczerpanie cieplne, and heatstroke, as well as exacerbate pre-existing issues like cardiovascular problems.

Officials are urging residents, particularly the vulnerable, to stay indoors and hydrated as much as possible.

The heat wave is also fueling wildfires in other parts of the country.

W Kalifornii, firefighters are battling a blaze that started on Saturday northwest of Los Angeles, burning 12,000 acres and forcing the evacuation of the Hungry Valley outdoor recreation area.

Tymczasem, in southern New Mexico, wildfires have forced the evacuation of the community of Ruidoso, home to around 8,000 ludzie.

While it is too early to definitively link the heat wave to climate change, meteorologists note that it is occurring earlier in the year than historical averages, with central Maine running a staggering 30°F (16.7°C) above normal.

This underscores the need for continued efforts to mitigate the impacts of a warming planet and prepare communities for the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
