January 5th, 2024 — Pismo Beach, a popular tourist destination in California, has recently been the site of a tragic incident and significant coastal damage due to powerful waves.
Un turista de Georgia de 39 años, Brindha Shunmuganathan, perdió trágicamente la vida un sábado por la mañana en Pismo Beach.
She was knocked down by a large wave while taking pictures with her family near the Sea Crest Hotel.
Tragedy stuck as a large wave unexpectedly knocked Shunmuganathan and her two children down.
While the family managed to rescue the children, Shunmuganathan was repeatedly hit by the waves and got stuck on a bed of rocks.
Despite the efforts of bystanders and first responders who performed CPR, she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Pismo Beach Suffers Over $55,000 in Wave Damage
In addition to the tragic loss of life, Pismo Beach has also been grappling with significant coastal damage caused by powerful waves.
Last week, waves of up to 25 feet pounded the area, causing an estimated $55,000 in damages.
The high surf eroded cliff sides, damaged coastal structures, and deposited sand onto the streets.
City officials are now scrambling to address the aftermath and prepare for another round of high surf predicted by the National Weather Service.
The advisory warns of large breaking waves, que van desde 10 a 15 pies, with local sets potentially reaching up to 18 pies. In response, city crews are clearing storm drains of debris to gear up for the impending waves.
As the community braces for more high surf, city officials urge residents and visitors to exercise caution and observe the waves from a safe distance.
The City of Pismo Beach is also developing a coastal plan to address the long-term effects of rising sea levels and coastal erosion, set for evaluation by the city council this spring.
