Burning Man 2023 officially begins today, August 27, 2023, after Hurricane Hilary caused disruption and delays at the playa, which was flooded earlier this week.
The week-long festival, which is known for its self-expression, self-reliance and the rejection of corporatism and capitalism, is taking place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.
The festival is known for its unique and creative atmosphere. There are no rules or regulations at Burning Man, and people are free to express themselves however they want. This makes for a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Festival Back on Track After Initial Delays
The Burning Man Project announced on Monday that the opening of the gates and access to the playa would be postponed due to flooding in the Black Rock Desert.
Access was finally granted on Wednesday at 12pm so that participants could start setting up camp before the start of the event which is scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 4.
Despite the threat of rain and wind from Hurricane Hilary, thousands of people have already arrived at Burning Man. The event is expected to draw an estimated 70,000 people this year.
The Theme of Burning Man 2023: Animalia
Burning Man 2023 is themed “Animalia,” a celebration of the animal kingdom, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals.
“The theme invites us to explore our own animal nature, both the wild and the tame. It encourages us to be playful, curious, and creative. And it challenges us to think about our relationship with the natural world in new ways“, as reported by the Burning Man Journal.
Attendees this year are expected to show up at the site wearing colorful, extravagant outfits inspired by the animal world.
About the Event
The festival began in 1986 with a small group of friends who gathered to burn a wooden effigy in the desert. Over the years, Burning Man has grown into a major cultural phenomenon, attracting over 70,000 people from all over the world.
The name “Burning Man” comes from the festival’s central ritual, the burning of a large wooden effigy. The effigy is a symbol of the impermanence of life and the importance of living in the present moment. It is also a reminder that we are all part of a larger community and that we should take care of each other.
The principles of Burning Man are radical self-expression, radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, leave no trace, and civic responsibility.
These principles guide the way that people interact with each other and with the environment at Burning Man.
