Burning Man 2023 officially begins today, August 27, 2023, after Hurricane Hilary caused disruption and delays at the playa. The week-long festival is known for its self-expression, self-reliance, and the rejection of corporatism and capitalism. The festival is taking place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada and is expected to draw an estimated 70,000 people this year.
The East Coast doesn’t have any true deserts, but there are a few places that can give you a desert-like experience without having to drive far. Here are three places to check out: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, The Pine Barrens, and The Outer Banks.
