If you are wondering whether there are any sandboarding spots in CDMX, the answer is yes!
Within the enormous metropolitan area of the city you can find a slope of volcanic origin, called “El Arenal”, in the town of San Andrés Totoltepec, where you can slide down with your board.
El Arenal – San Andrés Totoltepec, Ciudad del Mexico
This is a very unique location for sandboarding in Mexico, located within the borders of large urban area rather than in a desert: the “dune” is really a hill made of volcanic ashes from the nearby volcano Xitle.
The sand granules are dark and porous, making the experience similar to volcano boarding.
To get to El Arenal, take the metro to the Xochimilco station and then take a taxi or bus to the town of San Andrés Totoltepec. Once in town, ask for directions to El Arenal.
Once you have your sandboard and are ready to go, simply head to the top of one of the slopes and start sliding down! Sandboarding is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. It is also a lot of fun!
