The Grand to Grand Ultra (G2G) is a unique event – the first and only self supported stage footrace in North America.
The 2023 race will take place from September 24-30, starting from the north rim of the Grand Canyon and finishing on the summit of the Grand Staircase.
The course covers 275 kilometers (171 miles) over six stages, and is known for its challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions.
Despite the difficulty, the G2G is a popular race among ultrarunners, who are drawn to its remote beauty and sense of adventure.
In 2023, there are over 100 runners registered for the race, including a number of past champions.
Information and Schedule
The Grand to Grand Ultra 2023 is scheduled to take place in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, USA, from September 24-30.
It will span 275 kilometers (171 miles) across six stages, beginning at the north rim of the Grand Canyon and concluding at the summit of the Grand Staircase.
The race schedule is as follows:
- September 24: 68 kilometers (42 miles) from the north rim of the Grand Canyon to Jacob Lake, Arizona.
- September 25: 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Jacob Lake to Kanab, Utah.
- September 26: 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Kanab to Lee’s Ferry, Arizona.
- September 27: 77 kilometers (48 miles) from Lee’s Ferry to the Escalante River, Utah.
- September 28: 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Escalante River to the Aquarius Plateau, Utah.
- September 29: 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Aquarius Plateau to the summit of the Grand Staircase, Utah.
The race is 6 days long, with a camp each night. The distances of each day vary from 8 to 53 miles. There are cut-off times each day, but they are generous and will accommodate everyone. An awards party will also take place on September 30th.
Participants in the Grand to Grand Ultra are responsible for their own support throughout the race, carrying all necessary supplies.
The challenging conditions, including extreme temperatures and weather variability, make this a demanding yet rewarding experience.
Completing the race offers runners a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of the American Southwest and push their limits of endurance.
It’s a test of both physical and mental strength, culminating in a sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming significant challenges.

If you are interested in entering next year’s race, you can register online for the Grand to Grand Ultra 2024. Registration for G2G 2024 ends on June 30th, and the race is set to take off in September.
