The Mojave Desert is a rain shadow desert, formed when mountains block the path of rain clouds.

The Mojave Desert is in the rain shadow of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains and Transverse Ranges, which block the moisture-laden clouds carried by the prevailing winds. As these clouds rise over the mountains, they cool and lose their moisture on the windward side, leaving the leeward side, where the Mojave Desert is located, significantly drier.
